Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) are traveling cells in physiological fluids which are shed from cancerous tumors, enter the circulatory system, and migrate to distant organs to form metastases. Detection of CTCs from peripheral blood, as a "liquid biopsy", represents a reliable potential alter-native to routine cancer diagnostics, however, extremely low abundance (a few to hundreds CTCs among 109 haematologic cells in whole blood) brings a great technical challenge for isolating/counting of CTCs. We are developing novel microfluidic devices and engineered nanobioprobes for highly sensitive capture and detection of circulating tumor cells in blood.
